ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) POLICY

Journal of Health Science (Jurnal Ilmu Kesehatan)

  1. Purpose and Scope

The Journal of Health Science (Jurnal Ilmu Kesehatan) recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI), including generative AI tools and AI-assisted technologies, may support academic writing, research, and editorial processes. However, the use of such technologies must comply with the principles of academic integrity, research ethics, transparency, confidentiality, and responsible scholarly publishing.

This policy establishes the requirements for the use of AI tools by authors, editors, and reviewers involved in the publication process of the journal.

AI tools must not replace human judgment, scientific expertise, critical evaluation, or accountability. All individuals involved in the publication process remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, validity, and ethical integrity of their work and decisions.

  1. Policy for Authors

2.1. Permitted Uses of AI

Authors may use AI tools to support limited and appropriate activities, including:

  • Improving grammar, spelling, punctuation, and language clarity.
  • Translating text, provided that the authors verify the accuracy and meaning of the translation.
  • Improving readability, organization, and presentation of the manuscript.
  • Supporting data organization, coding, or statistical analysis, provided that the methods are scientifically appropriate and the results are independently verified.
  • Assisting with literature exploration, provided that all sources are checked against the original publications.

The use of AI must not compromise the scientific validity, originality, or ethical standards of the submitted manuscript.

2.2. Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose the use of generative AI tools or AI-assisted technologies when these tools have contributed substantively to the preparation, development, analysis, or presentation of the manuscript.

The disclosure should identify the name of the AI tool, its purpose, and the nature of its contribution. Authors should provide sufficient information to enable readers and editors to understand how AI was used.

A disclosure statement may be included in a separate section entitled “Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process.”

Example:

“During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [name of AI tool] for [specific purpose]. The authors subsequently reviewed and revised the generated content and take full responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of the final manuscript.”

Routine spelling, grammar, and reference-formatting tools that do not generate substantive content may not require disclosure, unless otherwise specified by the journal.

2.3. Prohibited Uses of AI

Authors must not:

  • List AI tools or AI systems as authors or co-authors.
  • Submit AI-generated content as original scholarly work without appropriate verification, revision, and disclosure when required.
  • Use AI to fabricate or falsify research data, results, images, references, citations, or other scientific evidence.
  • Use AI-generated references without verifying that the cited publications exist and support the statements made.
  • Use AI to manipulate images or research findings in a misleading manner.
  • Use AI to plagiarize, conceal unattributed borrowing, or misrepresent the originality of a manuscript.
  • Upload confidential, identifiable, or sensitive research data to public AI platforms without appropriate authorization, ethical approval where applicable, and adequate data protection.
  • Use AI in a manner that violates research ethics, patient confidentiality, informed consent, copyright, or applicable data protection requirements.

2.4. Authors’ Responsibility

Authors retain full responsibility for all content submitted for publication, including content produced or modified with AI assistance. They must verify factual claims, references, calculations, statistical results, and interpretations before submission.

The use of AI does not exempt authors from compliance with the journal’s publication ethics, authorship criteria, plagiarism policy, and research ethics requirements.

  1. Policy for Editors

3.1. Responsible Use of AI

Editors may use AI-assisted tools for limited administrative or editorial support, such as language checking, identifying potential formatting issues, or organizing editorial information, provided that such use is consistent with the journal’s confidentiality and data protection requirements.

AI tools must not replace the editor’s independent assessment of a manuscript’s scientific quality, originality, relevance, ethical compliance, or suitability for publication.

3.2. Confidentiality and Manuscript Protection

Editors must not upload unpublished manuscripts, reviewer reports, author information, or other confidential editorial materials to public or unauthorized AI tools.

Any AI system used in editorial work must be assessed for appropriate confidentiality, data security, and privacy safeguards before use.

3.3. Editorial Decision-Making

Editors must make all editorial decisions based on scholarly merit, methodological rigor, relevance to the journal’s scope, ethical compliance, and the reviewers’ informed assessments.

AI-generated recommendations must not be accepted uncritically. Editors must independently verify any AI-assisted assessment and ensure that decisions are fair, unbiased, and free from inappropriate discrimination.

Editors must not rely solely on AI-generated plagiarism assessments, AI-detection scores, or automated recommendations to reject a manuscript or allege research misconduct.

3.4. Accountability

Editors remain fully accountable for editorial decisions, the protection of confidential information, and the fair administration of the peer-review process.

  1. Policy for Reviewers

4.1. Use of AI in Peer Review

Reviewers may use AI tools for limited assistance with language clarity or the organization of their own review notes, provided that the use does not compromise confidentiality, independence, or the quality of the review.

Reviewers must independently evaluate the manuscript’s scientific contribution, methodology, data interpretation, ethical compliance, originality, and relevance.

4.2. Confidentiality

Reviewers must not upload or disclose unpublished manuscripts, supplementary materials, research data, or confidential editorial communications to public or unauthorized AI tools.

Reviewers must comply with the journal’s confidentiality requirements throughout the review process.

4.3. Prohibited Uses of AI

Reviewers must not:

  • Delegate the substantive evaluation of a manuscript entirely to AI.
  • Submit AI-generated review reports without careful human verification and critical assessment.
  • Use AI-generated judgments as the sole basis for recommending acceptance, revision, or rejection.
  • Use AI tools to reproduce, distribute, or exploit confidential manuscript content.
  • Use AI to generate unsupported allegations of plagiarism, misconduct, or scientific invalidity.
  • Use AI assistance in a manner that compromises the independence, fairness, or confidentiality of peer review.

4.4. Disclosure and Accountability

Reviewers must disclose substantive use of AI in preparing their review when requested by the journal. Reviewers remain responsible for the accuracy, fairness, and appropriateness of all comments and recommendations submitted to the editor.

  1. AI Detection and Research Integrity

The Journal of Health Science (Jurnal Ilmu Kesehatan) recognizes that AI-detection tools may produce false-positive or false-negative results. Therefore, AI-detection scores must not be treated as conclusive evidence of AI misuse, plagiarism, or research misconduct.

Any concern regarding inappropriate AI use must be assessed through a fair, evidence-based process, including human evaluation and an opportunity for the relevant authors to respond, where appropriate.

The journal reserves the right to request clarification, supporting documentation, original data, or revisions when there are reasonable concerns about the integrity or reliability of a submission.

  1. Violations and Editorial Actions

Failure to comply with this policy may result in appropriate action in accordance with the journal’s publication ethics procedures. Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, actions may include:

  • Requesting clarification or additional disclosure from the authors.
  • Requesting correction or revision of the manuscript.
  • Rejecting a manuscript when serious ethical or scientific concerns remain unresolved.
  • Referring suspected research misconduct for further investigation in accordance with applicable procedures.
  • Issuing a correction, expression of concern, or retraction for a published article when justified by the evidence and applicable publication ethics standards.

Any action must be proportionate to the circumstances and consistent with the journal’s established editorial procedures.

  1. Final Statement

The Journal of Health Science (Jurnal Ilmu Kesehatan) supports the responsible and transparent use of AI technologies in scholarly publishing. AI may serve as an assistance tool, but it must not replace human authorship, scientific judgment, ethical responsibility, or editorial accountability.

All authors, editors, and reviewers are expected to comply with this policy to maintain the integrity, credibility, transparency, and quality of the journal’s publications.

This policy may be revised periodically to reflect developments in AI technology, research ethics, and international scholarly publishing standards.
